Using Prairie STRIPS on Iowa Farms To Clean Water, Protect Soil & Increase Biodiversity

  • 13 Aug 2015
  • 6:30 PM
  • Cascade Meadow Wetlands and Environmental Science Center, 2900--19th St. NW, Rochester, MN

Learn how Iowa State University researchers have been using narrow prairie buffers (only 10% of a crop field) to greatly reduce soil erosion and phosphorous and nitrogen fertilizer loss to area rivers. Youngquist will discuss initial research in central Iowa, as well as the adoption of STRIPS of private farms. He’ll also cover the benefits of prairie and design considerations for siting STRIPS within farm fields and take questions at the end.

These talks are part of the Zumbro Watershed Partnership’s “Water Ways” Speaker Series that takes place the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Cascade Meadow Wetland and Environmental Science Center in Rochester.
